What is a prosthetic sheath used for?

A prosthetic sheath is most commonly worn against the skin underneath any prosthetic socks. When worn against the skin, a prosthetic sheath will protect your residual limb against friction by absorbing movement between your sheath and stump socks. A prosthetic sheath acts as a low tech perspiration barrier. Sheaths are knitted with nonabsorbent synthetic materials such as stretch nylon . Nylon allows any perspiration to pass through the prosthetic sheath and into your prosthetic socks, offering you a feeling of dryness.
